Mum and I felt adventurous this year and decided to take a stroll to Chinatown after our reunion dinner tonight. We figured if we went there at 8pm, it wouldn't be as crowded. Boy we were so wrong! The entire street at Smith Street was packed like sardines!! We haven't even advanced much when mum said she didn't wanna walk no more! *laughs* I was like "Mum! We haven't even started!"
You wouldn't believe how packed it was until you go experience it for yourself. Even trying to get out was a problem! At one point in time, no one was moving. We were almost literally back to front and front to back with the next stranger. Here's a piece of advice for 2009. If you're planning to go to Chinatown on the eve of Chinese New Year, please be prepared to be pushed and/or stepped on, or rolled over by baby strollers (yes, clueless mothers actually push their baby on a stroller amongst the freakin' crowd. Believe it.) No point shouting or being angry because that's how it is. You want cheap buys on the last day, you'll have to endure the sweat and sometimes the pain (from being stepped on!).
So what did mum and I ended up buying? 3 bedroom slippers for $10, 3 pairs of earrings for $5, and a pair of bathroom slippers for $2!
Would we go again next year? Doubt it. Mum wasn't about to forget how her toes got run over by a baby stroller!
